Short Story Monday

I was hoping to have my first short story review up today, to play along with Short Story Monday. Looks Like I'm still a little behind, but I'm excited about joining in the discussion -- especially since I have some exciting new short story anthologies sitting on my desk, waiting for my attention.

First up is Elements of the Soul, edited by Michelle Devon at Twin Trinity Media.

Here's a summary from the publisher's website:
Through "The Fire" and "Purgatory" we suffer "Love and Loss" and a "Flood of Tears" until we get to those "Healing Scars" and are able to "Fly" again.

These are just a handful of the short stories published in this outstanding anthology from Accentuate Writers.

From humanity and understanding in stories like "Healing Scars" to lust and angst in stories like "Purgatory" Elements of the Soul will take you on a journey as diverse as the writers themselves, and as emotional as the touch of a child's hand or the slap of a love gone wrong.

In the pages of this book, you will find death, devastation and loss; you will also find hope, friendship and faith. The entire gamut of emotions will be run in this anthology, leaving no feeling unturned, no relationship unexamined, no heart untouched, but told in bite-sized chunks to easily satisfy your reading hunger.
And here's a trailer that has motivated me to make sure I have reviewed at least one of these by next Monday!

Short Story Mondays are hosted by John at The Book Mine Set!

  1. Glad you could join Short Story Mondays this week, even if it's a slow week.

Have you read any of the authors before?

  2. My favorite story in "Elements of the Soul" is Jennifer Walker's "The Assignment". Forced by her mother, under threat of tuition cut-off, to complete a 1500 word essay, to not fail college English again, the narrator complains, “Why can’t she understand I’m a free spirit and I have to go where my muse takes me?” “A free spirit should not be confined by anything as mundane as homework. A free spirit should not be confined by grammar rules and quadratic equations. It’s my participle. Sometimes it dangles.”

“The Assignment” brings out the reader’s affection for the hapless narrator. The reader will laugh. The reader will be gleeful for each and every word the narrator carves out to slowly whittle down 1500 words to 1455. The reader will remember this story as the one to revisit whenever a smile is needed.

  4. Hey- nice to see that you have found the Elements series. I don't have a story in this one, but I do in an upcoming volume, and I'm enjoying this one myself. Am reviewing the stories at http://sharksshortstoryreviews.blogspot.com/

  5. Hey, Red. Thanks for mentioning the anthology. I'm the author of "Healing Scars" and the poet behind the words in "When the Rain Comes."

I look forward to reading more of what you have to say about the works in Elements of the Soul.

By the way, I love your blog! I'll be back again.

  6. Can't wait to read your review on the stories in Elements of the Soul! I authored Love and Loss and although I'm slightly biased because of this fact, I found the stories in this anthology to be wonderfully, powerfully written.

Looking forward to reading your upcoming review!
