Mailbox Monday -- Life From Scratch by Melissa Ford

Thanks to Bell Bridge Books and Melissa Ford, I just got the ARC for Life From Scratch, Melissa's novel coming out December 1, 2010.

Mostly I'm excited because I enjoyed reading Melissa's first (non-fiction) book, Navigating the Land of IF, so much. Frankly, if she can make me laugh that much writing about infertility treatments, I can't wait to read her novel!

Book Deluge and Prairie Dog Cookies

I've been super tired for the last month or so and have been doing little reading as a result. I'm starting to feel a little more like myself and have had a relatively light week at work, so have been doing more reading for fun this week than any time in the recent past.

Here's what I've read so far this week:

The Accidental Werewolf by Dakota Cassidy
The Ugly Duckling by Iris Johansen

The Scourge of God by S.M. Stirling

Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

And I'm halfway through Hood by Stephen Lawhead

Whew. Not sure how all that will combine in my head, but I'm surprised I haven't been having weird dystopian / Robin Hood / werewolf dreams yet.

Ohh ... and also this week, I got this cookie cutter from Kritters in the Mailbox. (yes, I paid for it, but I'm going to tell you about it anyway, because it's adorable.)

Mockingjay Hiatus

Sorry I've been slacking on blog posting this week. The only excuse I can give is that I was trying to avoid the internet chatter about the Mockingjay release (the final book in The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins) and now I'm reading it in all my free time. I should be back to normal by tomorrow --- or maybe Friday!

Relative Insanity by Shauna Glenn

Check it out! Very excited about Relative Insanity by an online friend:

Here's how Shauna describes it:

"People are emailing asking what the book is about. Seriously, it’s been so long since I’ve read it that I hardly remember. But if memory serves it’s about a wife/mom named Kate, who gives up her career outside the home to stay home and raise her three children. She’s surrounded by a cast of characters also known as her family. Kate struggles with feelings of discontent…she constantly feels like her life has amounted to being nothing more than the resident nose wiper. And she’s not happy about it.

If you like this website you’ll love the book. Kate is ridiculous…like me. You will laugh more than you will cry, and don’t be surprised if you confuse Kate with me. Everyone who’s read it says something like…'I love the part where YOU blah blah blah.' And I’m all 'DUDE, THE BOOK IS NOT ABOUT ME!'

It’s fiction. Honest."

Sleepy Prairie Dog

We're getting some summer thunderstorms rolling through West Texas these days. I had no idea until we got a prairie dog pet that rain makes them sleepy --- even the threat of rain in the area. Guess it's a defense against flash-flooding in the wild.

You can see more Wordless Wednesday at the headquarters (sorry, been slacking on the quilt pictures again this week).

I Was Told There'd Be Cake by Sloane Crosley

Today is Teaser Tuesday. Teaser Tuesdays are hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading.

It asks us to:
(1) Grab our current reads.

(2) Let the book fall open to a random page.

(3) Share two (or three) teaser sentences from that page somewhere between lines 7 and 12 (avoiding spoilers).
We're also supposed to share the book title and author so others can find the book themselves.

Here's my teaser for today from I Was Told There'd Be Cake by Sloane Crosley.
In the past five years alone, I have left my wallet in a cab an astonishing, nay impressive, 6.7 times. (The .7 is for all the times I would have gone ID-less into a bar had someone not slid across the pleather backseat after me and said, "Forget something?".) With the exception of that first seventeen-dollar idiot's fee, my wallet gets returned to me fully intact every time. Every. Single. Time.

Moon Rise by Marilee Brothers

Summary: Here's the summary of this young adult science fiction from Marilee Brother's website:

Her mom's still dating losers. Her boyfriend's gone back to Mexico. Dad still hasn't told his wife and kids that she exists. At school, the drama queens and bullies still rule. But worst of all for Allie Emerson--aka the Star Seeker of an old Gypsy prophecy--is that her powers have taken a hike. She can't read minds anymore. She can't move stuff just by looking at it. The other Star Seekers are counting on her psychic gifts more than ever, and the evil Trimarks are closing in, eager to snatch her magic moonstone necklace while she's helpless. The hot new guy at school is ready and willing to fight her battles, but he comes with some wicked baggage.

"Dear Diary: I'm a little worried. My new BF is a demon."

Welcome again to Allie Emerson's funny, scary, amazing, and always unpredictable life, as the girl voted least likely to save the world from evil.

Reaction: I reviewed the first book in this series in November, Moonstone, and enjoyed it enough that I requested the sequel from the author. Moon Rise was just as much fun. I still think Allie being such a believable character is the key to the series. Her struggles with trying to compensate for her irresponsible mother and learn about her potential are what make her a realistic teenager. The magic is just an added bonus!

I also enjoyed how this sequel is a complete story arc. (I have a pet peeve for second books that just trail off to make you buy the third to have any resolution to the story.)

Bottom Line: Another big thumbs up for Marilee Brothers!

(Thank you to the author and publicist for this review book.)

Summer in West Texas - Horny Toads and Prairie Dogs

Saw my first real-live Texas horny toad this summer! My husband caught him and turned him loose in the backyard. Love the camouflage:

Hoover's pretending like he wants to go outside, too. Very convincing as long as he's in the air conditioning. Once he's outside, it's all scratching on the glass to be let back in.

"Forgive my bluntness, Miss Brailsford, but I try never to underestimate a woman. Particularly not an Englishwoman"

Lambert was perplexed by Jane's sweet smile in response, "Very well, Mr. Lambert. In that case, I conceded that I am quite capable of snooping. Let us go and find the proper authority together."

Burr Gherkin Pickles

This year we tried out growing burr gherkins for the first time. The vine has been great and climbed up our trellis nicely. We've also been getting lots of these little spiky cucumber-type fruit on a regular basis. So far, I've been putting them in salads, but this week, I decided to make pickles from some after reading about a nonstop pickle recipe in Mother Earth News. Here's how they turned out:
I added garlic and dill to the vinegar for these pickles. Loving the taste of the ones I've sampled so far! I've also cracked my mom up because my grandmother used to have nonstop refrigerator pickles going all the time.

Blog Hop '10 -- Introduction

BlogHer / Blog Hop: This time last year I was at the BlogHer conference in Chicago. This year the group's meeting in New York City (which I have never seen). I'm only slightly jealous. Really. (Or maybe more than slightly jealous, but things were way too crazy here this year for me to go.)

So, instead, I'm staying home with an empty Skype list and watching the fun on Twitter. Pensive, though, is hosting an alternative Blog Hop tour for those of us in the same situation. You should totally go check these other writers out!

Introduction: As for those just stopping by here from Pensive's site or elsewhere, welcome! We're excited to meet you. I started this blog a little more than a year ago after moving to a relatively small town in West Texas and wanting to find new people online to talk about books with.

As a result, I've added SO many books to my To-Be-Read list (usually science fiction, and a surprising amount of young adult literature) and lots of fun blogs to my reading list. It's been so good to communicate with authors and other book fanatics out there.

Also in the meanwhile, we've expanded our family by adding a pet prairie dog. He's a year and a half old and not spoiled at all:

Anyway, it's great to meet you. Hope you have fun here and come back to visit often!

Mockingjay Tour Starts Now!

I'm still reading lots of other books, but mostly I'm holding my breath until the end of the month when Mockingjay, the final book in The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins, is published.

If you haven't checked out this series, its a young adult science fiction story set in a future after the destruction of the United States. The country is divided into 13 districts, each of which specialize in the production of a certain good or service. As punishment for a past uprising, each district must send two children to fight to the death in the hunger games. After following participants through two rounds of the games, I'm excited to see how the trilogy resolves.

Several book bloggers are hosting a tour this month, organized into representatives of each district. The tour kicks off today in District 1 with GalleySmith.
